We visited Alnwick Castle a few days ago. If the weather is with you, the gardens and everything there is great, interestingly, the organisation is looking to bring activities into the night time, in winter etc so that this can be a whole year round visit.

This 8 ½ to 9 mile walk has got to be one of the best and most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall. We set off early afternoon with a slight westerly wind behind us (always the best way to walk) and with the sun shining beautifully. Once on the crags at Walltown, we were rewarded with wonderful views in all directions.

I visited New Mills Trout Farm today. This is located just off the A69 on the main road into Brampton. There are a number of fish ponds where the brown and rainbow trout are located and a good country style tea room. Dan, who took us round, gave me a quick informative talk on how he manages the farm and what facilities it provides.

I was walking early evening yesterday along the River Irthing banks on the edge of the field opposite us on the south side and at a fairly quiet location close to the wood; I saw a bird intently searching the water in the river. You could see the ripples on the surface of the water where the fish come to the surface. I was about 15 feet away from it wearing a bright yellow hi vis jacket but they didn’t spot me.

It's spring time here in Cumbria! The daffodils on the south side of Tantallon House are really blooming well this year. We planted them about two years ago and because they get the warmth being in front of the south facing wall, they seem to be about two weeks earlier that the other daffodils in the rest of the garden. We hope you enjoy some of the photos I have managed to take of our bed and breakfast accommodation on Hadrian's Wall.

After doing a recce of a few sites around Gilsland to view the illuminations, we decided to go to a hill about a mile north of Gilsland called Curry’s Rigg. This was where the bonfire for the Year 2000 celebrations was held so we thought it was a good place to go. Most of the guests from Tantallon House and those from Hill on the Wall decided to go with us.

Details of a walk I recently did near Spadedam, about 2 or 3 miles away from GIlsland and Tantallon House. It takes through by the forest and has some great views of the Penines.

On one of the last few days the snow was here, I ventured up to Crammell Linn Waterfall. This is about 2 miles north of Gilsland Village, near Brampton, Cumbria and there is a public footpath from the Gilsland Spa Hotel to the Falls if you want to walk to it in the summer.

The snow scenes here in Gilsland have been wonderful over the past few days. There has been fresh falls about an inch or so for the past few nights – the nights have been cold, clear, moon lit with some stars. Tantallon House looks so different in the snow and all the roads to each side of us have been white as few vehicles venture along unless they have to.
