Carvoran Army Museum near our Hadrian’s Wall Accommodation

We have visited the newly refurbished Carvoran Army Museum just outside the village of Greenhead and located on the Hadrian’s Wall Trail, northwest of Haltwhistle. The Vindalanda Trust, who run the museum, won about £6.5million from Lottery Funds a few years ago which they have used to refurbish the Museum and also the site at Vindalanda.

The whole Museum has been transformed. There is a new cafe/bookshop at the entrance as you go in. As you walk down the slope into the exhibition area, the information, displays and presentation are just superb. There is so much information about the fort of Magma as it was called and was located just west of the Museum in the fields. The reconstruction of the fort shows it to be immense as this was located at the junction of the Roman Stanegate Road running east west and the other Roman Road running north south called the Maiden Way.

One of the best things to see is the 20 minute 3D film. The old film used an eagle to fly along the Wall length. In this film they have used the same idea but have concentrated on the middle section of the Wall running from Carvoran to Housesteads. The film has been superbly made and features a Roman soldier talking about his experience on the Frontier.

There are displays of weaponry, tools, history of the Wall, chariots, and other excellent displays.

This Museum can’t be missed if you are staying with us at our Hadrian's Wall Accommodation - in our Cumbria Cottage or Gilsland Bed and Breakfast. It’s very good.
