Hadrian's Wall Walk - Walltown to Housesteads

This 8 ½ to 9 mile walk has got to be one of the best and most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall. We set off early afternoon with a slight westerly wind behind us (always the best way to walk) and with the sun shining beautifully. Once on the crags at Walltown, we were rewarded with wonderful views in all directions. The path is quite steep in places but steps have been provided by the addition of rocks from the local area. It’s much easier to go up these steps than it is to come down!

We walked at a reasonable pace but had stops for the views, to talk to others on the way, to have pit stops and something to eat along the way. After about 4 ½ hours of walking, we arrived in Housesteads, somewhat tired but exhilarated from the most fantastic walk.

Highlights of the section (and they are almost too numerous to mention) are:-

  • The frogs, hundreds of them, mating around Cawfields and Walltown
  • The fantastic views in all directions especially at the trig point
  • Great Chester’s Fort with its alter stone and stone arch
  • Cawfields Quarry
  • All the mile castles and turrets
  • All the wonderful sections of preserved wall
  • Steel Rigg and Peel Crags
  • Highshield Crags and Crag Lough
  • Sycamore Gap (with the most photographed tree in the world!)
  • Sections of the Claydon Wall
  • The sections of vellum and ditch along the way It’s a fantastic walk and would recommend this to everyone
