Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle

Tullie House is an excellent Museum and Art Gallery located close to the centre of Carlisle, which isn't too far away from our Holiday Cottage on Hadrian's Wall. At the moment, they are refurbishing the basement rooms to create a major exhibition of Roman history and Hadrian’s Wall.

The ground floor has the art gallery and while we were there, they had displayed, some wonderful landscape photos of Iceland’s volcanic rocks, ice and plateaux, which are very similar to the moon’s surface. Also there was an exhibition of Pre–Raphaelite paintings mixed up with Arts and Crafts paintings and artefacts influenced by William Morris.

Upstairs on the first floor, there is a more conventional display of Border History, the Rievers, Hadrian’s Wall, and Roman history, Dark Ages, Medieval, and the Civil War. This is a huge time frame to cover so the displays are short and based on the history of Carlisle.

Tulle House is located opposite Carlisle Castle and the 2 sites, along with a bit of shopping in The Lanes centre, make for a good day out.
