Carvoran Roman Army Museum Hadrian's Wall NorthumberlandThree miles down the road from our bed and breakfast in Gilsland is the Roman Army Museum at Carvoran. Situated on a very attractive hillside, the Roman fort of Carvoran originally guarded the Stanegate Road crossing the top end of the Tyne Valley and the Pennines. Originally, it was built as a separate Roman Fort but was connected later on to the Roman Wall when it was built. Much of the Roman fort has disappeared because of the pillaging by local farmers for stone, but the Roman Army Museum on the site really is a must to see for any visitor wanting to appreciate Hadrian's Wall. Carvoran Roman History on Hadrian's WallThe Carvoran site has a great collection of artefacts from when the Romans occupied the Northern part of England. The site itself has numerous replica and audio displays to help visitors really find out what it was like as a Roman soldier to be posted in this fort.
The displays are suitable for all ages and are a great attraction to visit if you are staying as a family in our bed and breakfast accommodation. You can see the weapons that were used as well as finding out how the Romans spent their normal day to day lives - what they ate, how they cooked, the equipment they used, how they spent their leisure time... There is also a Roman Army recruitment film which all visitors can see. Find out what life on Hadrian's Wall was really like. Eagle's Eye View of Hadrian's Wall Video at CarvoranThe video that is shown at Carvoran gives a magnificent aerial overview of the Wall built by the Romans between Carvoran and Housesteads. There are computer simulations based on proven research of the milecastles, forts and settlements which surround them. The beauty of the aerial photography is breathtaking as it sweeps majestically along the Wall's length. Life as a Roman Soldier on Hadrian's Wall at Carvoran MuseumThe displays of army dress, weapons, the inside of a barracks and general descriptions of life for a Roman soldier on Hadrian's Wall are very helpful. The museum can be seen in less than an hour but conveys a wealth of information and insights into the life for the average Roman soldier, guarding this most Northerly Frontier of Britain. |
