Hadrian's Wall Local WildlifeBirds, rabbits, bats, hedgehogs and foxes are all frequently spotted in the vicinity of Tantallon House B&B. In our garden we encourage two areas of wild grassland, where 'charms' of goldfinches feed on the seeds. Recently a number of deer have been spotted on our walks around the Irthing Valley. There is a whole host of wildlife to enjoy in this area.
Red SquirrelsCumbria and Northumberland are among the last remaining habitats of Britain’s native red squirrel. At Tantallon House we support a local initiative to try to save them. We also follow guidelines from the Save Our Squirrels charity for our garden. Sightings are rare but if you are really lucky you may spot a red squirrel! Explore the local wildlife while staying at our Bed and BreakfastAfter a great night's sleep at Tantallon House you'll feel re-energised and our hearty breakfast will set you up for the rest of your day exploring Hadrian's Wall. Take a look at our 3 4 Star Silver Accolade twin / double rooms which are comfortable, light and spacious.
Local BirdsRecent guests have included a couple of bird enthusiasts who were delighted at the diversity of the local bird population. In our garden alone their sightings included dunnocks, goldfinches, swallows, house sparrows, blue tits, coal tits, spotted flycatchers, swifts and nuthatches (unusual to see them so far north). Also spotted in the local area were treecreepers, curlews, oyster catchers, dippers, kestrels, sparrow hawks, buzzards, wheatears, lapwings, grey and pied wagtails, herons and kingfishers. We had no idea there were so many different species of birds around here. If you enjoy bird wildlife then stay at Tantallon House to explore this area of Cumbria and Hadrian's Wall. Hadrian's Wall Wildlife PhotosThe photos shown above of the roe deer in Gilsland, the foxgloves on Hadrian's Wall and the spirea in our garden were kindly provided by one of our guests, Lisa Burdett.
