Vindolanda Roman Fort Hadrian's Wall NorthumberlandThe Vindolanda Roman fort and museum near to Bardon Mill is easy to get to from Tantallon House Bed and Breakfast, as it is just off the A69 in the county of Northumberland and has good public transport links with the AD122 bus which runs the length of Hadrian's wall going past it. The site is maintained by the Vindolanda Charitable Trust who also administer the Roman Army Museum at Carvoran, another site which is well worth a visit. Vindolanda lies just to the south of Hadrian's Wall and encompasses a Roman fort and a fascinating civilian settlement. Vindolanda Excavation on Hadrian's WallArchaeologists work on this site on Hadrian's Wall for most of the year and it is sometimes possible to see them at work as they continue to excavate this Roman site. They are also often happy to answer any questions you might have, as experts on the area they are a great source of information. Vindolanda Hadrian's Wall RuinsVindolanda is split into the civil and military areas which date from around the 3rd and 4th century AD. Ruins of workshops, houses, temples, baths, a headquarters building and a commanding officer's residence are all visible as you walk round the site. The site has two museums; an open air one which features a replica Roman temple as well as a Northumbrian Croft. There is also a mock Hadrian's Wall constructed from turf, timber and stone as it originally looked before it deteriorated with age. Vindolanda Opening TimesThe Vindolanda site is open from 10am-5pm in Mid February, March, October and Mid November and between 10am-6pm between April and September when the weather is better and the there is more daylight to view the site! There is also Cafe Manga on site, which serves good food for lunch making it a great place to visit from our bed and breakfast.
